RaceBox vs VlastLap

A RaceBox Alternative That Lives in Your Pocket

RaceBox makes a genuinely great little datalogger. But it's a box you buy, charge and mount. VlastLap gives you the same instant, high-rate feel from the phone you already own.

What RaceBox does well, and where it stops

Let's be fair: the RaceBox Mini and Mini S/Micro are excellent at what they do. A 25 Hz multi-constellation GNSS module in a tidy puck, a clean free app, and one of the strongest drag-racing communities out there. If your world is 0-60, quarter-mile and trap speed, RaceBox earns its place.

But it's still hardware: roughly 129-280 € to buy, something to charge, something to stick to the windscreen, something to remember. And the feature set is deliberately narrow. There's no deep OBD-II integration, no live coaching, and no motorcycle lean-angle support. For a track-day rider or a coach, that's a lot of gaps.

VlastLap comes at it from the other direction: no box to buy, and a far broader toolset built for circuit, kart and bike.

Same immediacy, straight from your phone

The reason a dedicated box feels sharp is its update rate. VlastLap matches that feel with 100 Hz sensor fusion: the phone's IMU runs at 100 Hz and is fused with GPS at 1-10 Hz, so your brake point, throttle pickup, G-forces and lean all update instantly, no laggy GPS-only stutter.

  • 100 Hz reactivity for braking points, G-G and lean, the moment they happen.
  • ZUPT (zero-velocity update): your speed reads a true 0 in a tunnel or at a red light, instead of drifting.
  • Auto-calibration in ~30 s with free mounting, no fixed cradle or alignment ritual.
  • Auto start/finish line, no beacons, up to 10 sectors and a track heatmap.

On accuracy: for the thing that actually makes you faster, lap timing and the lap-to-lap delta, both tools are excellent. Centimetre-perfect absolute position on the map is a niche need (drag trap-speed, fine topographic mapping) where a dedicated GNSS box has an edge. If you want that, it's on our hardware roadmap, see below.

And a hardware roadmap when you want the niche edge

VlastLap isn't anti-hardware, it's phone-first and hardware-ready. In development: VlastLap Anchor, a fixed module with OBD/ECU access, and VlastLap Halo, a 1000 Hz logger for when you genuinely need dedicated-GNSS-class absolute precision, plus CarPlay / Android Auto. Start free on your phone today; add the box the day you actually need it.

Pro adds Cloud Sync, backup and web access for 19.99 €/year (about 1.67 €/month), less than two coffees, billed yearly.
